Stop the City Hall Tax Grab!

No New Taxes!

Mayor Nenshi and the Tax Hike Posse down at City Hall aren't satisfied with raising your taxes year after year after year.

Now, they want a whole new bunch of taxing powers which would let them raise - literally - dozens of new taxes on poor Calgarians.

They want to raise taxes on everyone and everything, including:

  • Uber and taxi trips.
  • Street parking and city parking lots.
  • Lime and Bird e-scooters.
  • Using cell phones and wifi within City limits.
  • Electricity.
  • City golf courses.
  • Billboards and other public signage.
  • Working from home or running home-based businesses.
  • Online sales and e-commerce.
  • Tourists coming to Calgary.

And this is only the beginning - the full list of potential new taxes is included in the report from the City's Financial Taskforce (not to be confused with the City's Economic Resilience Taskforce, because we obviously needed two), which really should be called the "Tax Everything and Everyone Committee."

The only thing standing between City Hall and dozens of new taxes is the Alberta government. Most of these proposed taxes require the provincial government's approval.

We don't think that City Hall should be given any new tax powers.

We need to tell the Alberta government to Stop the City Hall tax grab!

I, the undersigned, already pay too much in tax. I urge the Alberta government to not give the City of Calgary any more taxation power, and to direct them to cut wasteful spending down at City Hall instead!

City owned golf courses? The more I think about it, the more that makes me cringe. And wanting more money from Enmax, that’s just weird. Don’t they read Romans 13? But Psalm 2 says that the nations rage against God and against His anointed one. Lord, have mercy on us.

We have to pay more for reduced garbage service which should be in our property taxes not utilities.

The city government is out of control and needs to be more responsible with their spending. We do not need more taxes on homes or businesses they need to reduce all of their spending. Businesses and those employed to pay these taxes are not going to come into this town when it is this expensive to live here. We are already looking at moving out of Calgary, because we cannot sustain a continual increase in taxes and expenses every month. We are not making more why should the city.

We are really in a lot of pain here. Property taxes wipe out my pension for 3.5 months. At the same time mayor “feel good” Nenshi and his cronys are wasting time on their phony causes like “racism” instead of running the city efficiently. Dump them all come the election.

The outnumbered councilors deserve credit for trying to show the majority of council what common sense looks like. I can’t wait to campaign against all the tax-and-spenders next election.
