Flatline the Green Line!

Flatline the Green Line!

Calgary's Green Line LRT project is a train wreck.

The line will cost $5 billion for Phase 1 alone, and there's no clear plan for how the line will be built given the complex requirements of running it through the downtown core and the over the Bow River.

After more than ten years of planning, re-planning, re-designing, and re-inventing, not a single piece of track has been laid, and then project remains still on the drawing board.

It's time to pursue new transit options that won't bankrupt our city.

It's time to flatline the Green Line.

I, the undersigned, do not support the risky Green Line LRT project. I demand that City Council flatline the Green Line.

There is absolutely no reason for tens of thousands of people to commute to a downtown core. Covid has show that we can work from anywhere, downtowns are dead. The City just wants the tax/levy from businesses downtown. Take the City’s portion of the greenling and invest it in Enmax. Edmontons power company makes a lot more more than Enmax. Let’s grow and get Enmax growing for us. The profits will eventually grow and maybe we can buy out Edmontons and other Cities power companies. Time to change the way the City does business. If the Province wants to waste money, maybe a bullet train from Calgary to Red Deer and then Edmonton would be better. Stopping our useless council won’t help, but letting the provincial government know would shut it down quicker.

Ric McIver had it right to hold up funding on a project that does not have a complete budget. To continue without knowing the total cost of the entire GreenLine is irresponsible, especially with ridership numbers way down and Covid 19 costs out of control.

Given the circumstances we are dealing with today the Greenline and all City of Calgary capital projects show be put on hold. The money pen has run dry and taxpayers are unable to fund anymore projects. The Olympics was taken to a vote and was defeated. It is time to take the City to task on their out of control spending. As a long time business and commercial property owner I call prove that our company cannot survive anymore tax increases.

The capital cost per passenger is absurd. There is no foreseeable way for transit to be the sustainable option if the Greenline is the model. Calgary’s much touted transit friendly development model is a huge driver of out of control tax increases in Calgary.

Now is not the time to proceed with the Green Line. Use the BRT option for a few years and reassess at that time. The plebiscite is also a sound idea.

This council, with very few exceptions, is completely divorced from the reality of life for the vast majority of Calgarians . Their reckless spending, coupled with a ‘progressive’, big-ticket agenda, will bankrupt us all. And we have another year-plus, before we can do anything about it. Fiscal and societal tyranny.

If this city council, excluding Farkas and chiu goes forward with this gigantic boondoggle, they need their heads examined, and should never, ever regain their cushy seats in the next election. This horrific project must be stopped now before another of our hard earned nickels is spent, before incurring this massive debt all for the purpose of leaving a personal legacy led by Nensh. These councillors do not give a hoot for the people of calgary, the costs, the waster of our tax dollars on and on and on….. This is a self interest project for some 12 or more councillors and has nothing to do with a secure, liveable city.

Calgary Transit is perhaps the most inept, incompetent agglomeration of bureaucrats this city has ever seen. And that’s saying something! Recent news articles have heralded the imminent (2020) arrival of a “Smart Pay” system either by card or phone. Of course this “imminent” arrival has been “coming soon” since at least 2011. Never mind that cities around the world have been using these systems successfully for years, Calgary appears to want to re-invent the wheel, albeit decades late. Of course along with the absence of passenger data, Transit has no real handle on WHERE riders embark and debark, WHEN they do either, and HOW MANY are on board at any given time. Of course, they tell us that “Ridership is up x percent” but in fact, they don’t have a clue! And you want to trust these incompetents (along with the appropriate faces on Council) with AT LEAST $5,500,000,000 for 1/2 the project? NOT ME!
