Mayor Nenshi and the Tax Hike Posse down at City Hall aren't satisfied with raising your taxes year after year after year.
Now, they want a whole new bunch of taxing powers which would let them raise - literally - dozens of new taxes on poor Calgarians.
They want to raise taxes on everyone and everything, including:
- Uber and taxi trips.
- Street parking and city parking lots.
- Lime and Bird e-scooters.
- Using cell phones and wifi within City limits.
- Electricity.
- City golf courses.
- Billboards and other public signage.
- Working from home or running home-based businesses.
- Online sales and e-commerce.
- Tourists coming to Calgary.
And this is only the beginning - the full list of potential new taxes is included in the report from the City's Financial Taskforce (not to be confused with the City's Economic Resilience Taskforce, because we obviously needed two), which really should be called the "Tax Everything and Everyone Committee."
The only thing standing between City Hall and dozens of new taxes is the Alberta government. Most of these proposed taxes require the provincial government's approval.
We don't think that City Hall should be given any new tax powers.
We need to tell the Alberta government to Stop the City Hall tax grab!
I, the undersigned, already pay too much in tax. I urge the Alberta government to not give the City of Calgary any more taxation power, and to direct them to cut wasteful spending down at City Hall instead!
