Cut City Salaries!

Cut City Salaries!

City salaries are out of control.

City employees earn much more than their private sector counterparts. While thousands of Calgarians have seen their salaries slashed or been laid off, City employees continue to enjoy high wages, premium benefits, platinum pensions, and unparalleled job security.

The cost of employee compensation has gone up by more than 50% since 2010.

More than half of the City of Calgary's budget goes towards paying staff.

With Calgary in economic crisis, we can't afford to maintain these high salaries, and Calgarians can't afford to pay higher taxes.

Cut_Salaries_-_Petition.jpg

City Councillors Jeromy Farkas (Ward 11), Sean Chu (Ward 4), and Joe Magliocca (Ward 2) have purposed a 5% salary cut for City employees, including City Councillors.

This would free up money to hold the line on future tax increases and to invest in priority services like fire and police.

It's time for Calgary to live within its means, and for City Hall to share the pain being felt by Calgarians across the city.

We, the undersigned, demand that City Council pass a salary cut of 5% for City of Calgary employees.

Never has City Council and the Mayor listened to what Calgarians want. This pay cut would show good faith – but they have none. Cut anything else except your bloated salaries and pensions. Pathetic.

Any organization can reduce their expenses by 5% if they have the will to do it. Our current city councillors (with a few exceptions) are incapable of making tough intelligent decisions. Another reason why all elected positions need to have term limit.

I agree whole-heartedly with canceling the Green Line! Instead, we should rip up the b.s. bicycle paths, and return the downtown core to one with parking every bit as expensive as that in NYC! Oh wait, that won’t work, ‘cuz nobody works downtown anymore. No matter, force Nenshi and every other councilor to give up their indoor heated parking spots and sell them to the highest bidder, while forcing them to ride cattle baggage class on the buses and trains that they expect us to ride! Either that, or pedal their asses on the bicycles they expect us to ride! Oh wait, I forgot, nobody’s going to bid on those parking stalls ‘cuz once again, nobody works downtown! But hey, at least silly hall’s councilors will be forced to do what they expect everybody else to do!

How about a 10% salary cut for the ’world’s best mayor’? Then eliminate at least one of his multiple pensions. Nenshi has done this city enormous damage. And we have to endure him and his spend-a-holic minions for another year and a half. Can’t wait for some responsible municipal government.

City Council and Administration have been spending irresponsibly for years on the backs of BOTH residents and businesses. Their allegation that Calgary’s property taxes are the lowest in Canada is not fact-based. Council has a Cadillac pension plan that must be cut to what one councillor would get in other cities – not three. Civil servant wages should never exceed those in the private sector. Smarten up, or lose your jobs in 2021.

Don’t just look at wages, look at perks. How about every third Friday off. That is our tax dollars not at work.

Councilors should take a 10% cut and Nenshi a 20% cut.
