Cut City Salaries!

Cut City Salaries!

City salaries are out of control.

City employees earn much more than their private sector counterparts. While thousands of Calgarians have seen their salaries slashed or been laid off, City employees continue to enjoy high wages, premium benefits, platinum pensions, and unparalleled job security.

The cost of employee compensation has gone up by more than 50% since 2010.

More than half of the City of Calgary's budget goes towards paying staff.

With Calgary in economic crisis, we can't afford to maintain these high salaries, and Calgarians can't afford to pay higher taxes.

Cut_Salaries_-_Petition.jpg

City Councillors Jeromy Farkas (Ward 11), Sean Chu (Ward 4), and Joe Magliocca (Ward 2) have purposed a 5% salary cut for City employees, including City Councillors.

This would free up money to hold the line on future tax increases and to invest in priority services like fire and police.

It's time for Calgary to live within its means, and for City Hall to share the pain being felt by Calgarians across the city.

We, the undersigned, demand that City Council pass a salary cut of 5% for City of Calgary employees.

Never has City Council and the Mayor listened to what Calgarians want. This pay cut would show good faith – but they have none. Cut anything else except your bloated salaries and pensions. Pathetic.

Any organization can reduce their expenses by 5% if they have the will to do it. Our current city councillors (with a few exceptions) are incapable of making tough intelligent decisions. Another reason why all elected positions need to have term limit.

Daniel Kirk Sheridan I also own property in Calgary 248 Riverside Mews. That gives me a right to vote on this as far as I am concerned.

I believe that it is time for common sense to prevail, that is if it still exists! What is the % of the population that bikes in this city? What is the % of the population that no longer gets help to take transit? What is the % of the population that can afford to go to Flames games? What % of the population wants to see our speeds limits changed along with all the signage to what purpose? It is not just the speeders, it is the pedestrians who push the button and with out looking step into the intersection or are too busy on their cell phones to pay attention. Then there are those who drive impaired or high. Then there are those citizens whose homes could be destroyed by fire or lose a member of their family because city council has cut our police and fire dept to cover the above spending. How does it make sense to change speed limits but cut those who can inforce the changes. The amount of illegal drugs, robberies, stabbings seem to me should be of more of a concern than increased bike lanes. Why should the mayor get 2 pensions, when people lose their jobs because small business owners can’t afford the tax increases. Why should city employees not give up a small portion of their income to keep this city going during hard times and that is including the mayor and city council. As well this city council and Mayor should stop spending OUR money on making their mark on the backs of Calgary citizens who are just trying to exist in these hard times.

NO cut to the budgets of first responders is acceptable! Cut the ludicrous “art” and cut all the second and third pensions from the public purse. If you want them, pay for them yourself like all of us have to do!

They should have seen this coming years ago, but they are so out of touch with reality.
